L’Anse Aux Meadows

L’Anse Aux Meadows is the first shawl in a set of three shawls released as part of  the World Heritage KAL (L’Anse Aux Meadows, Tanumshede, Jelling Rune Stones). L’Anse Aux Meadows is located in Newfoundland, and there are remains from a Norse settlement – the only one in North America. It is thought to be the site referred to as Vinland in the Icelandic Sagas. Vinland was established by Leif Ericsson around 1003, and the Vikings were settled there for a few years until they returned to Iceland.

Vinland was named after the vinbaer (grapes) that grew there, and the shawl shows the vines spreading out over the back, with the ripening grapes near the outer edges.

The shawl is knit from the neck down. The pattern is charted, and the lace pattern is only on every other row.
