This poncho is for my friend’s daughter who will be spending the next 6 months in the hospital to recover from major surgery.
It was suggested that a poncho would be a useful garment for their early morning and evening walks outside the hospital in the spring and the summer, as it’s quick to put on and take off.
The pattern is rather inspired by AnneM’s wonderful Spiderman blanket and Revontuli shawl, but I made a 12 pointed star instead.
I used approx 200 g Kauni Effectgarn 8/2 and 4.0 mm needles.
CO 96 sts & join together
work k2,p2 ribbing for ca. 10 cm neck
then knit one round
after that work rounds as follows:
- k1, yo, k X sts, sl2-k1-psso, k X sts, yo 12 times
- knit
- k1, yo, k X sts, sl2-k1-psso, k X sts, yo 12 times
- knit
- k1, yo, k Y sts, yo 12 times
- knit repeat these 6 rounds, with y increasing with 2 sts every 6 rounds, and Y=2X+1. The first time X=2
Near the end continue in pattern but switch to garter stitch (the plain knit rows become purls) for 1 inch or so, and when you purl into the YOs purl into the back loop of the stitch to close up the hole for a solid edge.
Bind off with lace-bindoff.
This is what my Mystic Roses shawl look like, up to clue 1. I have seen lots of lovely pictures already in the KAL, and as always I’m amazed at how the different colours bring out different things in the design.
The second clue will be posted tomorrow.
It’s not too late to join the KAL. For more info look here.
The Riverside Wrap takes its inspiration from the flowing rivers and the shells on the shore.
The Riverside wrap is perfect for adding some flair and warmth to those cool spring and summer evenings.
My wrap is knit on 4.5 mm needles using 1 skein (4 oz) of 6/2 Rayon Tencel (600 yards) from Yarntopia Treasures or similar yarn. I used the Raindrop colourway (white, pale blue and periwinkle).
The blocked measurements of my wrap are:
length: 223 cm (88″), width: 33 cm (13″) but the length is of course adjustable.
You can buy a downloadable PDF file with this pattern (charts and instructions) using PayPal for $8.00CDN.
I will be at the Sanguine Gryphon Retreat, May 1-3, teaching a class on how to design lace.
The plan for the weekend is to take a dyeing class with the Gryphon on Friday. We’re spending the day in her studio learning various dyeing techniques. On Saturday we will be going to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. And on Sunday there will be two knitting workshops – one on lace design with me, and the other one most likely on sock knitting with Gryphon.
If anyone is interested in joining us, there are still a few spots open at the retreat.
The swatch pattern has been posted for the Mystic Roses knitalong. My swatch is knit in Wollmeise Lace-Garn on 3.75 mm needles, and measures 17.5 cm x 19.5 cm
The picture makes the yarn look a little more variegated than it actually is. There are lots of different shades of red in it, but no orange and no pink.

I have received a few skeins of yarn in the mail in the past few weeks. The first one (in amber) is Sappho Laceweight from the Sanguine Gryphon. The colourway is “I Cannot Work the Loom”, and I have two 3.5 oz skeins with 850 yds in each of them.
I’m getting ready to wind them (just working up the patience), and then they will be turned into…. you guessed it. A lace shawl!
The second package contained a number of different skeins from Yarntopia Treasures. There is one skein of Tencel 5/2 is 525 yds in a 4 oz skein. It was dyed in solid Rust for me.
Unfortunately I just learned that the tencel 5/2 will likely be discontinued. But there are lots of other yarns with a similar weight.
There are 3 skeins of a Bamboo cotton blend in a solid Amethyst – each 4 oz skein contains 420 yds. This is the same yarn I used for the South for the Winter scarf.
And one skein of Egyptian wool-silk (52% wool/48% silk) 360 yds – 4 oz. This yarn is a little heavier than the other ones – more of a sport weight. But it is amazingly soft with a special luster to it. And it’s dyed in Camel, Olive Drab, and Black.
Finally – just for fun, some crazy colours. This is a Rayon Boucle yarn, fingering weight, in Horse Play. I think this might become something for the kids.
